I’ve just discovered a band called The Lumineers. I stumbled upon one of their videos on YouTube. The song is called “Stubborn Love,” which almost sounds like a tautology. When is love not stubborn? Isn’t that the whole point? The lyrics include the refrain “when we were young,” but I swear they all appear to be twelve years old. Two other verses:
It’s better to feel pain
than nothing at all.
The opposite of love
Pay attention now.
I’m standing on your porch
I won’t leave until
you come downstairs.
Reminds me of the “Stella!” scene in Streetcar Named Desire. The song was recorded in an old bus, outside of Portland, OR.

Mark Lanegan Band – Harborview Hospital (4AD Session)
I ran across this video on the KEXP website. It's a cheery song about Seattle's historic public care facility, Harborview Hospital, where band leader Mark Lanegan once spent some time for God knows what. If you're like me (and let's hope you're not), you're pleased to find any middle aged rocker who (a) looks as [...]
Stendhal on Love: ‘You behave like an idiot, get over it’
"Human beings are driven by their inner natures," said Stendhal, in his treatise On Love. "They are constitutionally unable to avoid doing those things that give them the greatest pleasure." Was he saying that human beings are born hedonists? Not exactly. Rather, he was saying that people are helpless before their passions, their primary passion [...]

Baby Gaga – the New Ice Cream Made from Human Breast Milk
If you're a Baby Boomer like me (and if you're not, why are you here?), you might or not have partaken of the joys of breastfeeding when young. Growing up during the Baby Boomer surge, when baby formulas were touted as a processed substitute for natural breast milk (my own theory is that this was [...]
Secret Lyndon Johnson Tape – LBJ Orders Some Haggars
Everyone knows that when you advance into your middle years it can be a challenge to find clothes that fit just right. Is it the body that changes, or the cut of the clothes? One of the eternal mysteries of the universe. But don't feel alone, even leaders of the free world face this dilemma. [...]
I've always thought of Microsoft's Steve Ballmer (currently the 33rd richest man in the universe, according to this year's list in Forbes, which places him ahead of such luminaries as Paul Allen and George Soros) as the Harvard MBA version of the quintessential middle-aged Angry White Guy. Strip him of his education, breeding and wealth, [...]
Super Bubba giving up Happy Meals? Say it ain't so, Bubba, say it ain't so! But it is. Former president Clinton has seen the light, and has sworn off his evil eating ways. In the interview video below, although he looks as though he might be going through a bit of deep-fry withdrawal, he sounds [...]

According to several new studies published in the March issue of Neurology, obesity can accelerate Alzheimer's disease, as well as a number of other brain maladies.
